미술관의 중심인 마당에 쉼터와 그늘을 제공하는 '그 무엇'을 만들되 마당의 원칙인 비어있음을 최대한 유지하려는 일견 상반된 가치의 모색에서 출발하였다.
마당의 땅을 그대로 들춰 접어 커다란 처마를 만들고 하부는 점점 좁아져 한 점으로 수렴하는 형태의 마치 거꾸로 매달린 피라미드와 흡사한 형태의 단면을 통해 외부는 미술관의 열린 마당으로서 커다란 처마 그늘 아래로 다양한 전시와 잔치를 위한 동적인 쉼터를, 그 내부에는 명상과 치유를 위한 정적인 공중 정원을 만든다.
건축의 역사는 이성과 기술의 발전이라는 미명아래 자연의 법칙(중력, 높이, 밀도)에 대항하기 위한 인간의 욕망을 구현하는 도구에 다름 아니었다. 바벨탑 이후 고딕 건축의 높은 기술적 성취를 거쳐 초고층 마천루로 이어지는 중력에 대항하고자 하는 높이에의 욕망은 오늘날에도 그 끝을 보이지 않고 현재 진행형이다. 인류가 만든 원초적 건축형태인 피라미드는 한국을 비롯한 다양한 문화권에서 기원을 가지고 현대의 거대한 루브르 미술관의 중심에까지 자리하며, 강력한 문명과 이성의 상징이다. 우리는 그러한 태고의 유적遺跡을 반전시켜 유적囿擿을 만들고 마당의 중심에 자연을 두고자 하였다.
예술은 우리에게 익숙한 것의 '낯설게 하기'를 통해 현실을 환기 시키는 큰 기술이고, 국립 현대 미술관은 이러한 새로운 생각들을 시험하는 장소라고 생각한다. 이런 환경에 우리가 제안하는 유적囿擿은 서로 악다구니 하는 우리 도시의 숨가쁜 일상을 한 발짝 늦추고 휴식을 제공하며 문명과 자연에 대한 성찰을 위한 공간이 되어 사람들이 마당을 경험하는 새로운 방법을 발견하는 장소가 되길 바란다.
We started the search for the contradictory value of trying to keep the emptiness of the courtyard and to create something that can foster activity in the center of the museum.
The pavilion is formed by folding four sides of the courtyard. The resulting shape, similar to a pyramid hanging upside down, creates vast shading below the pavilion while keeping the openness and the possibility of various activities of the courtyard. Inside the pavilion, on the contrary, will become a serene public garden suited for meditation and healing.
The history of architecture was nothing short of a tool for realizing the desire to resist the laws of nature (gravity, height, density). The desire to resist gravity, in particular, is still ongoing; it can be traced from the tower of Babel following the technological achievements of Gothic architecture and to recent skyscrapers. The pyramid, which is one of the pure architectural forms created by mankind, is a symbol of civilization and rationality. We have reversed such ancient form to create a lifted garden in the center of the courtyard to symbolize the continuous challenge of architecture.
We believe art evokes reality through revealing 'strangeness' from what we are accustomed to, and MMCA (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) is where the experiment takes place. We hope the “Lifted Garden” will create a new perspective in the context and have people step aside from their daily routine to rest, meditate, and explore.
