서울역과 인접하여 사이트는 가톨릭 교회 역사상 가장 많은 가톨릭 성도들이 순교자로 사망한 처형장이었다. 이 프로젝트의 목표는 역사적인 사건을 기념하기 위한 가톨릭 박물관, 성당, 도시 광장으로 구성된 역사적인 공원을 만드는 것 입니다.
계획의 초점은 대지 주변의 여러 근대화의 부산물과 소란스러움으로부터 다양한 건축적 장치를 통해 시민들의 접근이 도시의 모든 방향에서 역사공원으로 원활히 이루어지고 이들의 일상이 드넓게 펼쳐지도록 구성하는 것입니다. 지상의 공원과는 대조적으로 하부에 숨겨진 150미터 길이의 기념비적 비움을 계획하여 순교 성인과 역사적 사건들을 기리는 추모의 정원과 기념전시관을 두었습니다.
순교성당은 거대한 공원의 무게중심이자 지상(현재)과 지하(과거)를 엮는 결정체로서 도시를 향해 광장을 형성합니다. 주요한 종교적 행사 시 광장을 통해 추모 공간이 숭례문과 약현성당의 역사문화 축에 면하여 도시로 확장될 수 있습니다.
Adjacent to Seoul station the site was the former execution ground where the largest number of catholic saints died martyr in the history of the whole Catholic Church. The target of the project is to make a historical park, which consists of Catholic museum, Cathedral and an urban plaza to commemorate those historical events.
Key of the proposal is to make a park completely enclosed from surrounding chaotic by-product of past modernization such as railway, elevated highway and high-rises. Park is completely empty to accommodate diverse kinds of peoples everyday life in present, meanwhile the museum is located underground, hidden from park meaning the past and memory with its monumental 150m long memorial sunken garden.
Finally the cathedral, the center of gravity is spatially combining those four elements (plaza, park, museum and garden) with its monolithic mass and light. With its wall opening, religious events are unfolded to the historical axis via urban plaza.
