조진만은 한양대학교와 Tsinghua대학에서 수학하였습니다. 한국과 중국, 유럽에서 오랜 실무 후 한국과 네덜란드 건축사를 취득하였습니다. 귀국 후 2014년 설립한 조진만건축사사무소는 관습적인 공간을 창의적으로 변화시키고 역할을 잃어버린 공간들에 새로운 가치를 부여하는 작업을 통한 새로운 가능성을 추구하고 있습니다.
우리 일상과 도시를 도발하는 여러 작품들을 통해 문체부 젊은 건축가상, 국토부 신진건축가상, 김수근 건축상, 미국 Design Vanguard상, 독일iF어워드, 서울시 건축상, 대한민국 공간문화대상, 세계건축상 등 다양한 건축상들을 수상하였습니다. 저서 ‘그를 만나면 그곳이 특별해진다’ (쌤앤파커스 출판사)는 2022년 세종도서에 선정되었습니다. 한양대학교와 Taylor’s University에서 겸임교수로서 교육활동과 경향신문, 한국일보에서 칼럼니스트로 집필활동, 수성구 총괄건축가 및 서울시 공공건축가로서의 활동도 병행하고 있습니다.
건축은 무수한 모순과 제약들을 빚어 만들어내는 예술입니다. 매번 다른 제약 조건과 장소가 가진 잠재적 가치에 대한 근원적인 물음에서 출발해 공간, 구조, 형태 등 건축을 구성하는 여러 측면에서 미지의 끝자락까지 고민을 끌고 나가는 것이 바로 우리가 추구하는 건축입니다. 이러한 철학과 프로세스를 통해 클라이언트와 더불어 시대의 새로운 가치를 발견하고 그것을 공간적 감동의 수준으로 구현하는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

Jinman Jo studied architecture at Hanyang University and Tsinghua University. After extensive professional experience across Korea, China, and Europe, he obtained architectural licenses in both Korea and the Netherlands. Founded in 2014, Jo Jinman Architects seeks new possibilities by creatively transforming conventional spaces and redefining forgotten or underused environments through design that gives them renewed value.
Through provocative works that challenge our everyday lives and urban environments, the firm has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Young Architect Award from the Ministry of Culture, the Emerging Architect Award from the Ministry of Land, the Kim Swoo Geun Architectural Prize, the Design Vanguard Award (U.S.), the iF Design Award (Germany), the Seoul Architecture Award, the Korea Spatial Culture Award, and the World Architecture Award.
Jo’s book When You Meet Him, the Place Becomes Special (published by Sam & Parkers) was selected as a Sejong Book of the Year in 2022. He also teaches as an adjunct professor at Hanyang University and Taylor’s University, writes columns for The Kyunghyang Shinmun and The Korea Times, and serves as the Chief Architect of Suseong District and a Public Architect for the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
Architecture, to us, is an art born from the tension of countless contradictions and constraints. Every project begins with a fundamental question about the latent potential of its site and conditions. Our design process explores this question to the edge of the unknown—through space, structure, and form. Through such philosophy and process, we aim to work with clients to discover new values of our time and translate them into spaces of emotional resonance.
